It was a lovely warm afternoon. My mobile phone was ringing on the desk. It was my friend Bruno.
“What’s up?” I said.
“Somebody told me that you were hurt by a stranger. Are you OK? Did he hurt you badly? How is your wound now?” he asked.
“Oh, Bruno. You ask me too many questions. How can I answer you for once? Thank you for worried about me. I am fine now. The wound doesn’t matter.” I replied.
“Be careful next time! I don’t want you to get hurt again,” he said.
“I will take care of myself. Don’t worry.”
“If you need any help, call me any time,” he said.
“I see. Thank you.” I hung up.
Bruno was a good man. He knew my job was dangerous. So he was always worried about me and asked me to be careful. We didn’t meet often, because he was a police chief. Things would be complicated, if anybody knew about our connection.
The warmly sunlight shined across the window and into my room. I looked at the clock. It was two o’clock. After the fight, I didn’t make contact with Ivan, because he was drunk and I was in pain. But I had to call him at once. I was worried about him. I wanted to know if he went back to his villa safely last night.
Before I could dial his number, there was a knock on the door. Who would come at this time? I opened the door with the question in my head. When I opened the door, Ivan hugged me. He came in with his personal doctor.
“I’m sorry for leaving you alone last night,” he said.
“I’m fine. But how do you feel now? You drank too much last night. I was worried about you,” I said.
Ivan left me and said, “I feel much better now. And I knew what happened last night already. My driver told me everything. The man was caught by our member this morning. I talked with him before I came. Anyway, let the doctor check your wound first.”
“Don’t worry. My wound doesn’t matter. I don’t need a doctor to check it.”
“No, I will worry about you if I cannot hear my doctor say you are fine,” he insisted.
“Ok, I will let him to check my wound,” I said.
The doctor came over to me. I took off my clothes and show him my wound. He checked it carefully and bandaged it again.
“Your wound was bandaged very well last night. It will be healed in a week. I think you’d better rest for a week,” he said amicably.
“Thank you. I will ask my driver to send you back,” Ivan said.
After the doctor left, Ivan sat on the sofa and looked at me. “I feel sorry for you. If I hadn’t got drunk, you would not have gotten hurt,” he said and put his hand on his head.
“That’s OK, to ensure your safety is my duty,” I said. I didn’t want Ivan to blame himself too much. The night before had just been accidental.
“Don’t talk about your duty now. I don’t want to hear this. Do you know how worried I was about you when I heard that the man hurt you?” he said.
“I am sorry for making you worry about me. I feel better now, so don’t worry.”
“Do you forget my words? I think I told you to be careful last time. Why did you get hurt again? And this time is worse, you got a knife cut,” he said.
“I will be careful next time. I won’t get hurt again,” I said.
“I hope not,” he said and gave me a smile.
“By the way, what are you going to do with the man?” I asked.
“He said he was instructed by somebody in another mafia. Someone wants me to die, but not that man who attacked you,” he said.
“Do you have any idea who the person is?” I asked.
“I asked our member to do some research. I think I will get the answer soon.”
“What will you do next?” I asked.
“I’ll let the person know how stupid he is. He will regret what he did,” he said.
“But you won’t kill him, will you?” I asked.
“To kill a fool is not my interest,” he replied.
“That’s you,” I smiled.
“Don’t care about the person. From today you have one week vacation. Get some rest. You can stay in my villa if you want. I’m afraid you can’t take care of yourself,” he said kindly.
“Thank you, but I would like to stay here. Don’t worry, I am not a child.”
“I see. Anyway, take care. I’m leaving,” he said.
“Be careful when I am not with you. Don’t get into danger if you want me to rest,” I said.
He smiled but said nothing, then left.
From that day, I started my one week holidays.
One night, I went to a club alone one week. I didn’t often go to club. In fact, I didn’t like club so much. For me, it was too noisy there. I was there that night, because it was the last day of my holidays. However, it was not a good night.
I never imaged I would meet Rex again. And it was in that dangerous situation.
It was surprising for me to see Rex was with his friend in the club. Neither of us said hello. Our relation was complicated. It wasn’t good to say hello in public places.
One hour later, when I wanted to leave, I saw Ivan’s men there. They were looking for somebody. Soon I understood their purpose. I walked over to Rex, grabbed his arms, and took him into the restroom as soon as I could.
“I must take Rex away before they find him,” I thought.
I put my arm around him, one hand on his mouth, and my mouth was near to his ear. “Will you do anything for me without questions?” I whispered him quietly.
He nodded.
I looked out of the window. Outside was the backstreet. I knew the nearest way to my car from there. I went out through the window first. Rex followed me. We got in my car. We were out of breath, but there was no time for us to take a break. I drove away at once.
I thought we were very lucky when I remembered that night many years later. If there hadn’t been a window in the restroom, we couldn’t have run away.
“Now could you tell me what’s wrong?” he asked.
“Ivan’s men want to kidnap you,” I replied.
“I’ve guessed. Where will you take me?” he said.
“Call your father and let me listen,” I said.
I asked Mr. Thomas to send his bodyguard to my apartment to take Rex home, and told him Rex would tell him the whole story.
I drove home as fast as I could. At one point I was going over 180km/h.
When we arrived, three bodyguards and a driver were already there.
“Be careful,” I said before Rex got out
He nodded and gave a smile, then got out.
I parked my car and went back to my house immediately. I took a short break then made a cup of tea. The room was full of the smell of tea soon.
Things were going as I expected. There was a knock on the door ten minutes later. It was Ivan.
